The biblical account of the history of Israel begins with God’s call to Abraham to be the father of a new nation (Gen. 12:1f). The earlier chapters of Genesis contain the kind of stories which some scholars called myths (see p. 6), together with several ancient accounts of the beginnings and relationships of various other tribes and peoples.
